Under 9s' rugby is perhaps the biggest single change that the young rugby player has to face. Although there is still no kicking at this age group ,this is where full contact tackling is introduced, together with rucks and mauls. There are two man uncontested lineouts and three man uncontested scrummages where the non-offending side is guaranteed to retain possession. The usual tackle, ruck and maul laws apply, and games are nine per side. The games increase from seven minutes to ten minutes each way. It is at this age group that the distinction between forwards and backs begins to become noticeable.
